ABOUT
THE 13th DOLL
The
7th Guest and The 11th Hour were successful PC games which were released
by Trilobyte in the mid nineties. Since then it seems that there is
never to be an official sequel. So we, the fans, have taken it upon
ourselves to create a third installment in the series. This is in no way
intended as an official game, and is being created by a group of fans in
their spare time. The completed game is to be freely available by
download and elsewhere. No money is to exchange hands in any form
during the development and release of the game, etc. the 7th Guest
and all characters contained within are protected by copyright laws.
PLOT
Here
is a brief synopsis of the game's plot premise. Tad, the original 7th
Guest, has since been institutionalized after defeating Stauf in the
original. Depressed, misunderstood, and haunted by those he was
unable to save, Tad is determined to return to the mansion to free them,
but hasn't the means. That is, until a new doctor arrives at the asylum.
A young, impressionable doctor, naive to the power of Stauf and his
mansion. Will Tad return to save Stauf's victims and destroy their
captor, or fall victim himself? Will the doctor cure his patient, or
lose him to Stauf? It is up to the player to decide what happens next.
GAMEPLAY
GamePlay
for the 13th Doll will be fairly representational of the original
games. The mouse will be used to control all actions, including
navigation through the environment and puzzle solving.
Perhaps
the most exciting addition to the game is the ability to choose a
character to play the game. To add replay value to the game, the player is
given the choice of playing the game as Tad, or as his doctor.
Each choice will have unique puzzles and unique environments that lead
us to the Stauf mansion, where even certain rooms will be unique to one
story. Additionally, each game will have several unique endings.
The
bulk of the game will be solving puzzles to open new areas of the
environment, and unravel more of the story. In addition, each of
the playable characters have their own tasks to complete.
While
playing as Tad, the player must find and assemble the pieces of the
mysterious 13th Doll. Conversely, the doctor must collect and
assemble the portions of Stauf's 'Great Work', an intricate
machine with a mysterious legacy.
There
will be a unique mix of puzzles in the game. A certain
number of them will be AI puzzles, similar to the Othello and Pente
games in the prior games. Some of the puzzles will be classic
puzzles applied to the environment, most will be uniquely designed by
The 13th Doll team, and some will be revisited puzzles from the original
with added levels of depth.
DESIGN
The
game will be modeled in 3D and fully animated between
environments. The game's characters will be filmed using a
bluescreen process, and applied to the 3D environment,
A
new score is being written for the game.
For
testing purposes, the game will be designed in 3 phases,
beginning with a fully playable 2d storyboarded game, and ultimately a
fully 3d rendered game.
The
game will be playable under Windows 98-XP. Testing is underway to
run the game on Linux using a WINE emulator. A Mac version is
anticipated.

Who are you? Why a The 7th Guest sequel?
We are a group of fans of the games, scattered across oceans and
continents. Many of us first played the original games in our early
teens a decade ago. With most of us now in our twenties, we have
established our skills as artists, writers, composers, programmers,
etc., and are now capable of producing a sequel.
This site is created by fans of The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour games
released by Trilobyte in the mid nineties. Since it seems that there is
never to be an official sequel, we, the fans, have taken it upon
ourselves to create a third installment in the series. This is in no way

Why the 7th Guest? It's a great series that deserves another sequel.
Since a major developer isn't willing to do so, we've taken matters into
our own hands!

I heard news about an official sequel, The Collector. Isn't that
the actual The 7th Guest 3?.
The Collector looked like another great installment in The 7th Guest
series. The trailer for the game showed a lot of promise, but
apparently wasn't received well by the public. Subsequently, the
company planning to produce and publish the title backed out.
Hopefully some day The Collector will be released in some form, though it
seems unlikely.

3.
Is this legal? Aren't there copyrights that you're violating?
We've received word from Rob Landeros, regarding the
project. Here is an excerpt:
"Well, the only reason to be concerned about legal action from
me would be if the product, using the 7th Guest name or characters, were
in mass distribution and somebody were making a significant amount of
money from it."
While The 7th Guest and all characters are protected by copyright laws,
we officially have the green light to move forward with the game, so
long as noone is getting paid.

4.
When is the scheduled release date? When will a demo be released?
That's a tough one. We are all volunteers to this project. We all have
jobs, school, family, and other things that take precedence in our
lives. We have made good progress on the game so far, but we cannot put
a time frame on the release just yet.
We are currently working on a demo, we'll keep you posted on a release
date. Until then, you can download some puzzle demos (graphics
incomplete) on the Download
page.

5.
How much will it cost?
The completed game is to be freely available by download and elsewhere.
No money is to exchange hands in any form during the development and
release of the game, etc. Zip. Zero. Nada. The game will be freely
available for download.

6.
Will there be a sequel?
Whoah, tiger!!! Wait till we're done with the first one for a sequel!

7.
How can I help the project?
You can help the project in various ways. We are looking for
programmers, artists, 3D modelers, etc. If you fit the bill,
please visit the Forum!
You can also help by spreading the word about this project, either
through word of mouth, by posting links to our site, etc. Visit our Link
To Us page for details!
Back
8.
What art quality can we expect?
Expect as good or better than the original 7th Guest. We now have tools
available to us that weren't available to the original games' designers,
so superior quality shouldn't be too much to expect.
Back
9.
What music quality can be expected?
Judging from the completed pieces, fantastic. Check out the Download
page for a preview.
Back
10.
What will the size of the game be?
Big. We'll let you know just how big further along in development.

11.
What characters will be returning? Any chance that Robert Hirschbeck
would reprise his role as the original Stauf?
The plot is still under development, but so far, the game revolves
around Tad, the original 7th Guest. Of course, the game wouldn't be The
7th Guest without Stauf. The remaining cast contains all new characters
so far.
I wouldn't entirely rule out that Mr. Hirschbeck reprise his role, but
we'll have to wait until the project is further along to even begin
thinking about conceiving the notion of having any idea of approaching
the thought of even dreaming of a concept to contact him.

12.
What will hardware requirements be to play the game?
The 13th Doll is intended for Windows 98 and above. A Mac version
of the game is planned. We anticipate that Linux users will be
able to play the game using WINE, but we are not certain.

I'm having trouble getting some downloads to run properly. Any
suggestions?
Some downloads require WinZip (www.winzip.com) or similar to extract the
files. Files must be extracted to the same directory and run from that
directory. Make sure you have DirectX 8.1 or above running. Installing
DirectX 9 solves most problems. Report problems with downloads here.
