The 13th Doll Sat, 08 Aug 2015 17:42:59 +0000 en-US hourly 1 The 13th Doll Kickstarter: History In The Making Mon, 27 Jul 2015 13:13:46 +0000 kickstarterT13D

10 years ago a group of dedicated fans, programmers, and 3D artists embarked upon a singular journey.  These fans, dedicated to the legacy of The 7th Guest game franchise, had decided to strike out on their own to give the world a singular gift, a journey back to the enigmatic mansion of famed toymaker Henry Stauf.  That journey became The 13th Doll, a game by the fans and for the fans.

Today is an unprecedented event.  After a decade of working through long nights and weekends, the Attic Door Production team building the game now has a singular and historic opportunity.  It is rare that a fan game with 10 years of development actually comes to fruition.  It is rarer still that a fan game is allowed to exist as a not-for-profit entity without licensing conflicts.  But, the rarest and nearly unheard of arrangement is for the rights holder of the original game to grant permission for a fan game to have a Kickstarter campaign to assist them in completing the game!

The 13th Doll has been granted that license!  We are happy to officially announce the launch of our Kickstarter campaign.  We are still a game by and for fans of The 7th Guest game franchise, but now, we will have an edge that nearly no other fan game has had the opportunity to have.  By being allowed to have this Kickstarter, we now have the opportunity to dedicate full-time resources and to make this game the visit that fans have always dreamed of!  We have the opportunity to put the game on multiple platforms so that any fan, with any game system will be able to access it.  Most importantly, the Kickstarter presents us with the opportunity to get Robert Hirschboeck, Stauf himself, to return to the mansion in all his delightful and twisted glory!

This is not Attic Door Production’s Kickstarter campaign, but, a campaign for all of the fans of The 7th Guest franchise.  You have called for this throughout the years, and we have answered.  This is your game, and its future is in your hands.

So please. head on over to Kickstarter right now and pledge your support for The 13th Doll.  We have some great incentives out there and we’d love nothing more than fans to feel all the more a part of this endeavor.  It has been the fans who have kept us going throughout all these years and now it is the fans who will finally help to bring this game to its conclusion.

So, our dear, dear guests, we invite you back.  Back to a place of intrigue and horror, back to the halls of blood and terror, back to Stauf’s most humble home in Harley on Hudson.  Oh, the table is set, the hour has struck, and the guests have arrived,  All we need now is you!

Kickstarter In Our Future ?! Tue, 07 Jul 2015 09:31:21 +0000 So, we have news! We’ve just signed a deal that would allow us to sell The 13th Doll as a retail game! We’ll be able to sell the game for PC, Mac, etc, and potentially on platforms like Steam, GOG, console, etc.

Additionally, it allows us to cast Robert Hirschboeck as Stauf in the game! (Don’t get TOO excited about that yet tho, as we have yet to contact him and put that part together. It’s still great to have options.)

As always, this game remains a game that is built BY fans and FOR fans, and the licensing deal does not change that. This is by no means an official 7th Guest game, or a sequel of any kind – it’s still a fangame, the way it should be. 😀

So, this deal is contingent on us finding funding to finish the game – we’re seeking to raise enough for us to focus on the game full time, and to raise the bar on some things we’d planned, but scrapped for technical or logistic reasons.

So, in the coming weeks, we’ll be planning crowdfunding – probably a kickstarter. We need everyone to help us spread the word! We have 600 members here, and we hope to add many more to make the KS successful!

For the record, we owe a lot of gratitude to the team at Trilobyte! Without them, this deal would not have been possible. They have been very courteous to The 13th Doll over the years, and never has it been more apparent than now! That said, I know some of the people in this group have been a bit…. cynical towards them. At this time tho, our group can’t be happier, and I ask that you not speak negatively about them.

This is a time to celebrate! This is a time for hope! This is a time for new possibilities, and a time that allows us to make the game that we want to make, something that’s never been possible until now! The journey here has been long, strange, and difficult, and we’re very grateful that you’re still with us. As always, I sincerely thank you for hanging in with us.

Game Development Update – 6/13/2015 Sun, 14 Jun 2015 00:12:44 +0000 Hello Everyone,

The 13th Doll project continues to make jumps in progress.  As the official beginning of Summer approaches in the US, things are still heating up with the project.

For this update we are pleased to announce that both Heine’s room and Knox’s room have been completed.  There have also been some changes/fixes to the navigation in the game.

Lastly, we had some complications/issues with the website in the past week.  The issues have been resolved, although some graphical/text color updates still need to be done.  Overall, nothing was lost and everything is up and running.

That’s it for this month.  Rest assured, there is more to come.

Game Development Update – 5/13/2015 Thu, 14 May 2015 00:12:43 +0000 Hello Everyone,

First off, our lead developer Ryan/RHK had the opportunity to demo a bit of the current build at EPXCON last month.  The demo was well-received over all, although, most people preferred to marvel as they wandered around the mansion instead of playing the puzzles available to them.  Congratulations are in order for the development team and all the crunch work done on the demo.  Long hours, burning the wick at both ends with midnight oil, and perhaps a drop or two of blood went into making the build and everyone involved should be extremely proud.

On the programming side of things, 16 puzzles of a planned 26 have been fully completed!  A special kudos needs to go to Matt for coding out two very challenging AI puzzles.  In fact, at last report even Ryan wasn’t able to beat them, and that is saying something!  What would a journey to the Stauf Mansion be without a good challenge?

An even bigger announcement is that the entire first floor of the mansion is in the current game builds!  With the exception of lighting, some environmental elements, and a couple of other odds and ends, the whole first floor is done!  This is a huge accomplishment and, again, the development team deserves more than their weight in gold for their efforts.

As everyone can see, it has been a busy few months here at The 13th Doll.  We thank you for your continued inspiration and support.

– Chris

Game Development Update 4/13/2015 Mon, 13 Apr 2015 17:13:09 +0000 Hi Everyone,

It’s time for our April development update.  Things have been really moving along since last month!

As of right now 13 puzzles in the game have been completely coded or adapted to the Unity engine, with 3 more in progress!  That is half of the total planned puzzles completed!

There is currently a lot of focus by the team on the 1st floor of the Stauf mansion.  The models and textures are being massaged a bit, due to some import issues on the latest Unity version.  That process is going well overall in addition to the massive successes on the puzzle coding side.

The latest game build is looking nice overall and the puzzles are pretty darn challenging, if I do say so myself!  Kudos to the development team for their outstanding work!  It is an exciting time seeing all of this coming together!

Our community challenge to hit 666 followers on the Facebook group by April 7th failed but, we will eventually get another screen shot out to everyone.  Our fans and the support they give to us is really the largest reason why things keep moving forward.  We wouldn’t be where we are without them!  That being said, we don’t want to give away too many images either.  After all, what fun is the Stauf mansion without a few surprises?

Friday the 13th Update – 3/13/2015 Fri, 13 Mar 2015 23:56:17 +0000 Friday the 13th Game Progress Update! we decided to hit the game pretty hard back in January. We hadn’t really worked on it substantially in about a year, maybe more. James and I talked about it, and decided to just crank through it and get the thing done. A few weeks later, I was relishing the thought of how nice it would be to have another programmer on the team, and I couldn’t believe it – the very next day I got a message from Matt, one of our old programmers, wanting to help out. Working on the game again feels right, and we’re making amazing progress:

The game is being created in Unity3d, using the recently released Unity 5 (which looks amazing, btw).
We’ve created a new structure for puzzles that streamlines development, and makes things function in the same way. To the player, it won’t make much difference, but it makes programming puzzles way easier.
James is working hard on 3d models. They’re all very nearly finished, but most have some minor artifacts that need correction. Here’s where we sit:

Of 26 planned puzzles:
8 are complete
3 are in progress
a handful were done prior to the new format, and will need redone, but won’t be too big a challenge.

All of the rooms are 95% complete, and James is sorting through minor issues with them.
5 rooms are totally complete, and in the game with puzzles being integrated.

We have an end date in mind, but aren’t going to spill that just yet. It’s ambitious, but we’re on target to meet it. 😀 We appreciate all of the support you guys have given us. Please keep it up! 😀

Checking In Fri, 13 Jun 2014 17:13:23 +0000 Hello My Dear Friends,

It’s been quite some time since I have paid everyone here a little visit.  Granted, I have been over at my old haunt at Trilobyte assisting them in trying to raise funds to do some redecorating of their own.  However,  it is Friday the 13th an I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stop by and turn some heads.

I see that the team here has made some great strides forward since my last evaluation.  Although, I can’t but think that they aren’t getting into the SPIRIT of things lately.  Perhaps I should have left them something other than rat tartare to eat, and I was so certain that my scream cheese sandwiches were to DIE for.

That being said, I have been doing some soul searching, having lost mine long ago.  Perhaps you can help me, after all, you know I will give you what you deserve in return.  Pay the team a visit on Facebook and try to show them a spark of inspiration.  I can provide the electricity if needed.

My servants, I mean, friends at Attic Door Productions have been working on my house for a decade!  I didn’t know I had let it decay that much.  They could use an extra pair of hands or two, preferably with arms still attached, and some fresh blood in the house would do it some good.  So, if you or anyone you know has some skill in programming or 3D artistry, please drop the team a line.  After all, the more the merrier I say.  As I mentioned before, I will be sure to give them their just reward in the end.

Oh, look at the time!  It seems I have worn out my welcome a bit.  Well, time does fly, or perhaps, it stands still.  After all, it does feel like an eternity since I’ve had new guests come and visit.  We used to have such grand times, you know.  The panic, the screaming, the blood dripping from the walls.  Oh, I am salivating just thinking about it.

Well, I hope you shall all accept my invitation when the house is ready.

Until that day I remain your humble servant and host:

-Henry Stauf

Game Development Update 5/25/2014 Sun, 25 May 2014 20:29:41 +0000 Hello All,

Thanks to our developer James, we now have some information to pass along to the masses!

As of right now, the ENTIRE Stauf Mansion is fully navigable in the game!  In total around 95% of the visual game assets have been built and rendered.

The team also welcomed a new artist sometime in the past year to assist with getting all of the game art set.  This was probably a contributing factor to the majority of the visual layout being completed.

The area that is most lacking right now is in the area of puzzle development and implementation.  There are currently 2 or 3 playable puzzles in the game.  However, there are somewhere between 18-21 puzzles currently planned for the game.

Now, that being said, there is a reason for this.  Our programmers work on a volunteer basis.  This means that when they have projects that help to challenge and expand their programming skills outside of T13D or actually help to put food on the table, those projects will likely and justifiably take precedence over this one.

The best thing anyone can do to push the team forward is to encourage them and, if possible, to find us some more help.  Many hands make light work.

There is currently no information on the finalization of game dialog or any of the full motion video at this point in time.  However, these are going to be the last things on the development list.

Lastly, I have personally set up a reminder in my Google Calendar for the 13th of every month in order to touch base and provide some kind of update.  I have also let our lead developer know this so that he will be able to provide everyone with an accurate development snapshot prior to that date.

That is all for now.  Stay tuned for more in the future.

PS We are on the hunt for a new WordPress theme for the site.  We are shooting for something with Responsive Design, quick and easy social networking links, and an easy-to-manage color scheme.  Obviously spooky is cool if possible and free is a must.  It also must be a theme which gets updated when newer versions of WordPress are released.  Visit us on the Facebook Group or the Forums to offer suggestions!
